My brother, Richard Allen Cox, was born July 14, 1938 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois to Lynn Eugene Cox & Marguerite Estella Wing. To the left is the photo that was taken when he won "Baby King of Decatur, Illinois," in November of 1938 at the age of 3 months old. To the right is his Senior class picture that was taken when he graduated from Stephen Decatur High School.
Ten years older than myself, he was my hero from the time I can remember anything. He bought me my first bike, he taught me to love books, he was my mentor as much as he was my brother. Richard married Erma Dannewitz in July of 1959...they had only been married 3 years when he died at the age of 23 in Decatur Memorial Hospital on September 11, 1961. Gone, but never forgotten, my brother looms large in my memory and my heart. I pass on what I can about him to my own children. |
