The Davis's Family & the Pettis Family & the Wing Family began
intermarrying on or around the latter part of the 18th century. It seems
that they all have a mutual history connected to Massachusetts, Ontario,
Canada, New York, Vermont, Ohio, Illinois and Minnesota. This site is far
from complete and perhaps, with help and plenty of research we can fill in
the blanks.
MY THANKS:This site is brought to us by many people, without their help I would not have any of this information at all. A special thanks to 6 people who I consider my human angels. Jill Fockler for finally making our connection with Joseph Smith Wing and Rebecca Davis, Orville Wing for all of his information about Joseph Smith Wing, Artis Parshell for her friendship and for using her limited time in sending me everything she could concerning Joseph Smith Wing in Utah, John Jackson for everything he has sent about the Wing's in Pike Co., Illinois, Dale Wing for all of the fascinating information he has sent about Joseph Smith Wing's life and descendants and finally, Jane Bonny for all of the pictures, divorce transcripts, letters and information that she has contributed that help us know the young Joseph Smith Wing. My Thank You list continues to grow. I wish to thank Donna Orr for all of the information she has sent me about the Davis Family, John Brawford for sending me the manuscript written by Alice and Sadie Ponwith which includes the history of the Pettis Family, the Davis Family, the Hosford Family and a small section on the Wing Family. A special thanks to Robert W. Conrad who convinced me that Colonel Stephen Pettis was really the son of Stephen Pettis and Amy Button. Thanks to his continuing information we shall all learn more about the Pettis family. More mysteries need to be solved, more questions beg for answers, but thanks to all of you, our search continues to be enlightening and entertaining. I so appreciate all of the help and encouragement you have all given me. This information is freely shared, in the same manner that you have all shared it with me.
Thank you so much,
PIKE COUNTY ANCESTORS TIMELINETHE PETTIS FAMILY There is a Pettis Family Bible that was in the home of Dwayne Sawyer, son of Wilhelmina Pettis Sawyer which belonged to William Pettis.
THE
BIBLE OF WILLIAM PETTYES
As you will see below, William Pettyes and Mary Kinyon had eight children, two of which were Stephen Pettis, born November 1, 1751 and Joseph Pettis, born January 17, 1759. Stephen Pettis married Amy Button, however there is no known date of their marriage at this time. Joseph Pettis married Mary Chapman on February 17, 1785, eight years after the future Colonel Stephen Pettis was born, the child that it has been said is the child of Joseph Pettis and Mary Chapman. Colonel Stephen Pettis was born July 23, 1777 at Coventry, Kent, Rhode Island. It seems unlikely that Mary Chapman would agree to marry Joseph Pettis eight years after their first son was born. Indeed, all indications point to the fact that Colonel Stephen Pettis was the son of Stephen Pettis Sr. and Amy Button. Robert W. Conrad is the descendant of Col. Stephen Pettis and Catherine Wing through his great grandmother, Helena Pettis, who married the son of the Field that is buried in the Pettis Cemetery in Pike County, Illinois. the Field's lived in the first house north of the Pettis Cemetery. Let me share with you a little of my correspondence with Robert W. Conrad; The following was taken from the Pettis/Davis Family History by Alice and Sadie Ponwith... William Petty, son of William Petty and Mary Unknown was born probably at Westerly, Rhode Island (recorded at Charlestown, Rhode Island) on June 24, 1722. William Petty probably died in New York State after Jan. 31, 1794. William Petty was married four times. He married (1) Mary Kinyon/Kenyon in Bristol, Rhode Island on July 14, 1745, (2) Thankful Coalgrove/Coalgrave in Hopkinton, Rhode Island on June 9, 1776, (3) Mary Johnson on March 9, 1781, and (4) Dorcas Braman by 1789. Mary Kinyon/Kenyon was born July 28, 1721 in or near Bristol, Rhode Island, died after April 3, 1775. Dorcas Braman, the daughter of Benjamin and Martha Hall, was born in Westerly, Rhode Island on February 24, 1731, died after January 31, 1794. " On October 19, 1754, William Petty of Richmond, yeoman, for 800 (pounds) deeded Samuel Kenyon, of Charlestown, yeoman, 1 tract of 50 acres in Charlestown. Note: There are 3 spellings of the surname in this deed: Pettice, Pettis and Petty. Children of Stephen Pettis and Mary Kinyon/Kenyon: 1.
