I love this picture of my Aunt Mary & Uncle Joe. It was taken probably between 1925 and 1927 by one of those traveling photographers who
used to make their living by taking random photographs like this one. Mary Wing, born November 23, 1914 and Joseph Allen Wing, born February 17, 1917, were the daughter and son
of Joseph Allen Wing and Ruby Dean Lowe. Their older sister (my mother), Marguerite Wing, was in the house with her mother watching as Mary and Joe got their picture taken. Mom told
me that she and her mother were laughing so hard they couldn't speak because my Aunt Mary managed to get 2 socks of different colors in her hurry to get her picture taken.
Aunt Mary grew to be a beautiful young woman who married Donald Thomas Elliot and had two sons, Don Jr., and Jim. Unfortunately Aunt Mary died from breast cancer in November of 1953. Uncle Joe lived up to his mischievous smile and once drove his father's car onto Lake Decatur after a severe frost, thinking the icy lake would hold the car, of course it didn't. After that stunt, he married Ethel Dyer and they had four children; Judy, Joe, Philip and Marsha. Since this was first posted, Uncle Joe passed away in May of 2006; ASSUMPTION - Joseph A. Wing, Sr., 89 of Assumption, formerly of Decatur, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2006 in his home surrounded by his family. Funeral Liturgy celebrating Joseph's life will be held at 1 P.M. Monday, May 22, 2006 in the Star of Hope Mausoleum Chapel at Graceland Cemetery, Decatur, conducted by Father Don Wolford. Visitation will be held from noon until service time Monday. Entombment with the "Flight Home" Ceremony will be in the Star of Hope Mausoleum. Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the DMH Hospice. Joseph was born on February 17, 1917 in Decatur, a son of Joseph A. and Ruby Dean (Lowe) Wing. He was retired from truck driving after 34 years with Peoria Cartage, Norwalk and the Service Transportation. He was an employee of Rambo Pharmacy for seventeen years where he retired at age eighty. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Assumption. He was a member of the Knight of Columbus council 1026, the Teamsters local 279 and the Masonic Lodge 979. He married Ethel S. Dyer on April 28, 1937 in Decatur. She preceded him in death on December 28, 1990. He married Zelma M. Hanson on September 9, 1994 in Assumption. Surviving are his wife Zelma, children- Judith and husband Julian "Doc" Williams of Decatur, Joseph A. Wing, Jr. and wife Shirley of Van Buren, AR, Philip D. Wing and wife Mary Ann of Fort Smith, AR and Marsha Kay and husband Ralph Cox of Mt. Zion, ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
