Joseph Wing and Amy Pettis Wing were married June 25, 1804 in Vermont.
Joseph Wing was the son of Giles Wing and Mary Jane Cornell. He was born on February 28, 1782 at Danby, Rutland Co., Vermont. Amy Pettis
was the daughter of Stephen Pettis and Amy Button. Amy was born December 23, 1788 "within two miles of Hartford, Connecticut." After their marriage,
Joseph & Amy Wing left Vermont and settled at Cayuga County, New York.
According to family history, the couple moved in 1826 to Trumbull County,
Ohio where they stayed for about ten years until they finally settled in
Pike County, Illinois. Joseph & Amy had nine children, seven of which
grew to adulthood.
Joseph Wing and Amy Pettis were married for almost forty years, until Joseph's death in Ohio on Feb. 1, 1844. Joseph had prospered in Pike County, Illinois and he and Amy had returned to Ohio for a visit with friends and family. They stayed at their oldest son, Stephen Wing's home during their visit. It was during their visit with their oldest son that Joseph Wing died. Joseph Wing was buried in Ohio, after his burial, Amy Wing returned to Illinois. In Joseph's will he left the farm in Ohio to his son Stephen, to his son Mathias, he left 80 acres in Pike County, described as the south half of the southwest quarter of Section 26 in township 5, south of 3, west of the fourth principal meridian. For Amy's lifetime or until she remarried, she was to have the farm consisting of 120 acres in section thirty, the house and furnishings and all livestock. To his daughter, Phoebe, Joseph left fifty dollars and the household furniture was to be divided between Phoebe and Joseph's other daughter, Elizabeth Hatch upon Amy's death. At that same time, or at Amy's remarriage, the land was to be divided equally between Joseph's other son's, Joseph Smith Wing, Charles Wing & Benjamin Franklin Wing. It is said that Joseph Wing became a Baptist at the age of 24. His will was witnessed by the Rev. Jesse Elledge in 1843. Rev. Elledge was a pioneer Baptist preacher in Pike County, Illinois. Amy Pettis Wing would outlive her husband Joseph Wing by twenty years. Amy never remarried and it appears as though she devoted her remaining years to her children and grandchildren, raising various grandchildren at different times in their lives. Amy died on December 2, 1864 and was buried at Pettis Cemetery at Newburgh, Pike County, Illinois. Joseph Wing and Amy Pettis Wing had 9 children over a span of 28 years. 1. Phoebe Wing, who was born on April 16, 1805. Pheobe married Samuel Parker and they had three children; Stephen, Alfred and Leanda. 2. Elizabeth Wing, who was born March 23, 1807 at Cayuga Lake, Tompkins Co., New York. Elizabeth Wing died January 15, 1881. She married Eddy Hatch and they had one known daughter; Mary Ann Hatch 3. Stephen Wing, born May 29, 1810 in Vermont. Stephen died October 24, 1896 at Wingdale Farm, Clayton, Illinois. Stephen Wing married Olive Rice on October 12, 1834 in Trumbull County, Ohio. Stephen and Olive had three children; Theodore, Rose Linda and Sarah Elizabeth Wing. 4. Matthias Wing, born November 28, 1813 at Luzern, New York. Matthias died on August 22, 1896 at Lehi, Utah. Matthias Wing married Elizabeth Chenoweth and together they had four sons; Commodore Perry, John William, Samuel Joseph, and Norman Allen Wing. 5. Giles Joseph Wing, born January 17, 1816, died February of 1816. 6. Amy Wing, born September of 1821, died July of 1823. 7. Charles Wing, born January 24, 1829. Charles Wing married Helen Foreman and together they had three children; Alonzo, Sarah and Ann. 8. Joseph Smith Wing, born September 18, 1830 at Mecca, Trumbull County, Ohio. He died November 3, 1906 at Junction, Piute County, Utah. Joseph Smith Wing was married several times and had several children. There is much information about his life, his marriages and his children in this section. 9. Benjamin Franklin Wing, born August 16, 1833 at Pennsylvania. Benjamin died June 5, 1914. He married Christina Knudtson in 1863. They had two children; Albert F. and Rosalinda Wing. Benjamin married twice, his second wife was Anna Erickson and they had three children; Frances, Blanch and Frank Wing. |
