Giles Nelson Wing, son of Matthew Wing and Hannah/Anna Parr, born May
18, 1822, married Matilda Pettis, born April 27, 1827, daughter of Colonel Stephen Pettis and
his second wife, Olive Hutchins. Giles and Matilda were married at Pike County,
Illinois on November 28, 1844.
According to the Wing Family History by Alice Wing Jackson; Giles Nelson Wing's people came from Vermont to Ohio to Illinois. Giles Nelson was of medium height, heavy set, and at one time, the strongest man in Pike County, Illinois. He had sandy hair, blue eyes and he was a farmer who enjoyed a fair education. His religion was Christian Adventist. Giles Nelson Wing died of old age, being ninety-two years old at the time of his death. (Date of death was Dec. 24, 1914). He married Matilda Pettis, the daughter of Colonel Stephen Pettis and Olive Hutchins. Matilda was tall, slim, raw boned, high cheek bones and well educated. Her religion was also Christian Adventist. Matilda died with pneumonia a little over a month before her husband, Giles, died. Matilda was eighty-seven years old at the time of her death.(Date of death was Nov. 24, 1914) Nelson Wing went to California in the gold rush in a covered wagon. He had a ring made out of the gold he dug for his wife, Matilda. Giles Nelson Wing and Matilda Pettis nine children; 1. Alice Wing, born September 30, 1845 at Newburgh or Pike County, Illinois. Alice died October 23, 1871 at the age of twenty-six, due to childbirth and tuberculosis of the lungs. She is described as tall and slender, red curly hair, blue eyes, very pretty. She was well educated and became a school teacher. She loved horses and was a splendid horse woman. She was also noted as being very brave. Alice married Theodore Wing on April 12, 1866. They had a son Ezra, and a second son who was born dead. Ezra Wing, son of Alice Wing and Theodore Wing would go on to marry Mary Frances Anderson. They would have two children; Floyd Delmar Wing and Theodore Corneilus Wing. Floyd Wing married Edna Marrett. Floyd and Edna had two children; Alice Wing and Roy Wing. Alice Wing married Emmett Jackson and became Alice Wing Jackson, the author of many of the Wing histories you have read on this site. Alice and Emmett had a son, John Jackson who has been kind enough to send all of this information to me. Alice and Emmett are still alive and living close to Pike County, Illinois. I hope to visit them sometime soon. 2. Olive Wing, date of birth unknown at this time. Olive died of turberculosis but her date of death is also unknown. She married Caleb Kelly. Olive and Caleb had one child, Robert Kelly. Olive is described as dark complected, medium height, slim, pretty. She was also educated and taught school. 3. Homer Wing, born March 29, 1855, died December 17, 1917. Homer, tall, large and dark complected, was a farmer. He married Orsy Bulter. Homer died of hardening of the arteries. 4. Myra Wing, date of birth and death unknown. Myra had red curly hair, was light complected and was tall and slender. She was also educated and taught school. Myra married Caleb Kelly, who had first been married to her sister, Olive Wing and was widowed. Myra and Caleb had two children, Edna and Walter Kelly. Myra died of tuberculosis while living in California. 5. Ernest Wing, light complected, big and stout. Married Ella Rose and had three daughters. He dropped dead while working. 6. Myrtle Wing, Tall, dark complected, educated, taught scholl in church college. Myrtle was known as a very smart woman. Her religion was Seventh Day Adventist. Her husband was a Mr. Haugh, they had one child; Willie Haugh. Myrtle died with the influenza.
7. Steve Wing, medium height, red hair, blue eyes and light complected.
He was well educated and did a lot of traveling. Steve was known as a man
that could do almost anything. Steve married a woman named Ollie and they
had one child; Orlo Wing. Steve was only a few months younger than his nephew,
Ezra Wing, son of Alice. They bore so close a resemblance they could have
been brothers. Steve died in Fulton, Missouri. Ezra and his son, Floyd, Floyd's
daughter, Alice and her husband, Emmett Jackson attended Steve Wing's
funeral.
