Dear Toni and Janet,
Thanks so much for kind emails and for including me on the website. My amazing news is that I have 'found' ANN and am now able to confirm that the daughter of RICHARD and MARY NASH was in fact my great- great grandmother. Just on the offchance one night last week I decided to have a look at Genes Reunited. I typed in ANN NASH and there in the message box was someone searching for ANN NASH c. 1811 - West Dean - Lydney. I cpuldn't believe my eyes! I registered immediately and sent a message. I received a reply within 24 hours from a lady in Blakeney. She had been researching her g-g-g- grandfather - ISAAC JAMES. On the 1861 census he had a wife, ANN, four young children and 22yr old ROBERT NASH - nephew. She acted on a hunch that Ann's maiden name might have been Nash - and when she received a copy of their marriage certificate- it was confirmed. Ann, spinster, had married Isaac, a widower, in October 1941 - a few months after the Census when I had found her living with Richard and Mary at Parkend. Her father was recorded as RICHARD NASH and her brother Reuben and sister Eliza were their witnesses. They were both aged 30. The name James seemed familiar and when I checked all my census print-outs I realised what I had missed. I had found ROBERT on this Census already but had missed the fact that the wife was called Ann. His occupation was apprentice - Isaac was a carpenter so I had assumed that he was living with his employer. In hindsight, of course, as my husband rather smugly pointed out - he was a bit too old to be an apprentice. It's a rather nice story though don't you think? When Ann got married and had her own home she was able to have her son back to live with her-he was living with his father Thomas Hawker in 1841 Issac must have been a kind man - well I like to think so anyway. So now I don't feel so isolated on the West Coast of Scotland - as well as American relatives I have now acquired between 4 and 500 more in England - my distant cousin in Blakeney has been working on her Tree for quite a while! Anyway - now I have solved the mystery of ANN I am going to give it a rest for a while - my house needs a spring-clean and I have ironing up to the ceiling! Genealogy is completely addictive. But I will keep an eye on your great website. Kindest regards Moira Moria Writes to Matt Nash Dear Matt, My great-great grandmother was ANN eldest child of RICHARD and MARY Nash who were living in the 'Family Compound' at Sling Pit in 1851. Because of my particular interest in this generation I thought I would spend some time on the IG Index and try and sort them out. If this has now already been done since your brilliant 'Hypotheses and References' please forgive me - and ignore all this. I don't know for certain yet that JOHN and RICHARD were brothers - they might have been cousins - I have not yet identified their parents but the two familes were obviously very close. I have included known wives but not their children as I'm sure lots of of people will have already done that. One other slight discrepancy appears on the marriage record of THOMAS and CHARLOTTE. It seemed a little hazy about his birth date - it says 'About 1798'. when in fact John's son Thomas was born/baptised 1801/1802. Do you think it's significant? I can't find any evidence of another Thomas Nash of that stated age at that time. JOHN NASH born c. 1775 married SARAH JONES on 20 Jan 1801 at Newland. Losing 4 sons! It looks like JOHN Sr. was still alive in 1851 living - with a lodger - beside his brother/cousin RICHARD and 2 widowed daughters-in-law. If I have done my research properly all the men in the Miners Register of September 1838 appear above. Hope this is a useful contribution Regards Moira Gilfeather *ANN had an illegitimate son - ROBERT HAWKER NASH - in 1828 with THOMAS HAWKER of Bream. (My great- grandfather) Matt Writes to Moira;
Dear Moira, This is all very fascinating, indeed! Actually, I have not made much progress since I put together the "hypothesis" article. You are really helping us to fill in the pieces of the puzzle! I also enjoyed your recent message to Toni, posted on Toni's website Another distant cousin of my generation, Harry Nash, great-great grandson of Jeremiah (and, therefore, ggg-grandson of our William Nash) also believes that the father of William and Richard was John Nash. Below your message, I have pasted the message that Harry sent to me last fall (and I have CC'ed Harry here, as well as Toni Nash and my father, Thomas Henry Nash of Detroit, Michigan). If this is true, then John Nash would be my great-great-great-great grandfather. Now I hope that we can link John and Richard as brothers or cousins! By the way, it's also interesting to see the info about your Richard's son George, who married Sarah Dew. Information about their descendents has been appearing recently on Toni's website. See the information from Andrew Price at http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lynnash911/nashandrewprice.html and http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lynnash911/nashjamesdewobit.html; from Andrew's cousin Nicholas Wilmott at http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lynnash911/nashjamesdew.html; and guestbook entry #26 from Stuart Davis, also descended from George Nash. Note that Andrew puts the birthdate of George at 1821. [Toni may wish to forward this message to Andrew, Nicholas, and Stuart, if possible.] Please keep in touch! I look forward to sharing our progress on uncovering our family history as we each achieve it!
