William Arthur Nash aka "Art," was born July 10, 1904 at either Pincher Creek or Ft. Mccleod, Alberta, Canada, the son of Thomas Nash and Sarah Jane Cooksey. He died on September 26, 1962 in Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois. He married Dorothy May Goodpasture on June 22, 1922. Dorothy was born April 19, 1905 at Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois to Thomas Goodpasture and Ada Rucker. Dorothy died September 5, 1958 in Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois.

It would almost seem as though Art and Dorothy came from 2 totally different worlds. Art was one of at least 11 children that had moved seemingly all over the place, arriving in the Montgomery county area about 1918 or so, where he told his kids that he worked in the coal mines with his father and brothers. 1.According to his obituary in the Decatur, Illinois newspaper, he was 16 when he moved to Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois. Thanks to the Decatur newspapers we know that he moved here with his father, mother and brothers and sisters.

Dorothy on the other hand was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Ada Rucker Goodpasture. Thomas and Ada had given birth to 5 children but only 3 survived; Owen, Aneta and the young Dorothy who was 14 years younger than her brother and 11 years younger than her sister. There is no question that she was doted on, not only by her parents, but by her older brother and sister as well. Additionally, Dorothy's parents were divorced (date of divorce unknown at this time) but while it must have been a difficult experience for the family, Thomas Goodpasture remained a very large figure in his daughter's life.

We may never know for sure how Art and Dorothy met, but we do know that in the 1920 census for Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois, Art Nash was working as a clerk in the office at the railroad. Finally escaping the dangerous occupation that his grandfather, his father, his uncles and his brothers had followed for generations, Art Nash was working his way out of the coal mines. Whatever the circumstances were when he met the young Dorothy Goodpasture, they remained married for 36 years until Dorothy's death in 1958. They had 14 children, Dorothy never worked out of her home a day in her life, but the toll of having 14 children at home translated into a bad heart. She was only 53 years old when she died of a heart attack in her home.

William Arthur Nash and Dorothy May Goodpasture were married on June 24, 1922 at Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois. Art's father, Thomas Nash and Dorothy's mother, Ada Rucker Goodpasture Dill, stood up for the young couple. Art and Dorothy were going to be parents...he was 18 years old and Dorothy was 17.

Art Nash must have considered himself a lucky young man when he was hired into the Mueller Company in 1922. Art was newly married, with a child on the way and he was out of the coal mines.

Art Nash was listed as one of many who got a bonus of $33.33 for working at Muellers Company for 5 years, he also got a ham and bacon.


The money and the gifts of ham and bacon were very likely appreciated in the Nash household except for the fact that their Christmas was marred by the loss of their youngest daughter, Dorothy Marie Nash the preceding March.

DOROTHY MARIE NASH APPARENTLY IN GOOD HEALTH

Dorothy Marie Nash, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Nash, was found dead in bed at 4:20 o'clock Tuesday morning at the family home, 1023 North Oakdale Boulevard. She was born November 14, 1926. The baby was apparently all right when put to bed by the mother about 9 o'clock Monday night. When the father awoke at 4:20 Tuesday morning the baby was dead. Beside the parents she leaves two sisters, Betty Jane, aged four, and Florence Irene, aged two years. The body was removed to Moran & Sons where the funeral will be at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The burial will be in Fairlawn cemetery.

Dorothy Marie Nash, four months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Nash, 1028 North Oakdale, was found dead Tuesday morning. The cause of death is unknown as the child was found dead when the parents woke in the morning.

Besides her parents she is survived by two sisters, Betty Jane and Florence Irene. The body was removed to the Moran Funeral Home and prepared for burial.

How difficult that must have been for Art and Dorothy Nash, Art was only 23 years old, Dorothy was only 22 and they had 3 daughters, Betty Jane, Irene Florence and Dorothy Marie...only to lose Dorothy at the unimaginably young age of 4 months old. Dorothy is buried in the Babies Section at Fairlawn Cemetery, Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois

It had to have been a tough time especially for Art Nash. The year before he lost his oldest brother, George Harry Nash in February of 1926, then Art and Dorothy lose their youngest daughter in March of 1927, while his sister, Doris, was probably showing evidence of the illness that would take her away in August of the same year. Art's father had deserted the family in 1922, his mother was probably having a tough time surviving and was no doubt already talking about going back to Canada.


Life does go on...by June 11, 1928, Art and Dorothy were parents again. Like her mother-in-law before her, Dorothy was having babies on an average of every 2 years. (Actually I computed it once upon a time...Dorothy May Goodpasture Nash had 14 children in 27 years which averaged out to a child every 1 year and 9 months. The longest that Dorothy went without being pregnant was after the birth of her last child, Ruth, in 1948, she went 10 years without carrying a child when she died in 1958.

By 1939, Art Nash applies for and receives his naturalization papers...which meant that he became a citizen of the United States of America. He is listed as a British subject who lived in Canada. Incidentally, in the same year, Muellers Company took a picture of the Nash family for an article that features Art Nash, his wife and all of their children, which by then numbered 11...

By about 1944 - 1945, Art Nash is building a home for his family on Division Street in Decatur, Illinois. The Nash family had lived for a number of years at Oakdale Street in Decatur but it was small, 2 bedrooms, the kids slept horizonally on a bed that was made for folks to sleep vertically. The insulation was so poor that the older kids often talk about the ice that formed inside the windows. Nonetheless, this was a good life, especially for Art Nash I would imagine. Art had lived at Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada when the settlement was still fairly young. The Nash's worked hard. However humble the house on Oakdale seemed, it was probably much better than anything Art Nash had ever hoped to own. For Dorothy, she might have cringed a time or two but her love for Art Nash exceeded her espectations of what she thought life would be for them. At any rate, by 1944, Art Nash is building a home for his family that will boast 4 bedrooms. And by the time the house is build, the children that they have brought into this world number 12.

But it would have been around this same time that Art Nash received the news of his mother's death on May 14, 1946 at Fulford Harbor, British Columbia, Canada. Sarah Jane Nash had remarried but we do not know the date of her 2nd marriage at this time. She married Ole Noer, who from all I can learn, which is very little, was Norweigan or Scandanavian. Ole died on December 30, 1955 at Ft. Langley, British Columbia, Canada.

The Nash family home was a lively one from all of the stories that those of us who weren't born into the family have heard. Art and Dorothy Nash enjoyed a good party with their kids, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and they spent a lot of time together. For those of us who never met our father and mother-in-law, we understand we missed out on some great Nash parties.

Even while Dorothy and Art were adding to their family, their older children were married and having children of their own. Dorothy was pregnant along with 3 of her own daughters, but when Dorothy gave birth to a daughter, Ruth, on February 16, 1949, the child was stillborn and that was the last child that Art and Dorothy would conceive.

On June 16, 1955, tragedy would strike the family once more when they lost their daughter and sister, Norma Jean Nash Davidson at the young age of 27 years;

Rites for Former Norma Jean Nash, 27, to be Monday

Mrs. Norma Jean Davidson, 27, of near Moweaqua, died at 11:10 p. m yesterday in Decatur & Macon County Hospital. Mrs. Davidson, a native of Decatur, moved to Moweaqua last August. She was born June 11, 1928 in Decatur, the daughter of William A. and Dorothy Mae Goodpastor Nash. She married Marion N. Davidson Oct. 22, 1948 in Decatur. She leaves her husband; one son, Donald E. and three daughters, Wanda Jean, Debrah Kay and Pamela Susan, all at home; her parents of Decatur; seven sisters, Mrs. Betty Brown, Mrs. Irene Parnell, Mrs. Shirley Bailey, Miss Carol Jo Ann Nash, Miss Doris Aileen Nash and Miss Janet Louise Nash, all of Decatur; and four brothers, Allen E. Nash, James V. Nash, William A. Nash Jr., and John R. Nash,all of Decatur. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the J. J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home, with burial in Graceland Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m tomorrow at the funeral home.

Mrs. Dorothy M. Nash, 53, of 1312 W. Division St., died unexpectedly at 12:15 yesterday in her home.

Almost immediately after Dorothy's death, Art Nash became ill with cancer and suffered 4 long years until he finally succumbed to the disease on September 26, 1962;

Funeral services for William A. Nash, 58, of 1312 W. Division St., will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in J. J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday. (Betty) Brown, Mrs. Darold (Anneta) Aubert and Mrs. Paul (Carol) Mason, all of Decatur and Mrs. Floyd (Irene) Parnell and Mrs. William (Shirley) Bailey, both of Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Howard (Doris) Knight, Chicago. He leaves three brothers, Fred of Decatur, James and J. Wilfred, both of Detroit, Mich., and Peter of Royal Oak, Mich.; two sisters, J. A. (Nellie) Hattan, of Alberta, Canada and Mrs. O. N.
